Why I Hate Forums

I hate forums.

Why do I hate forums? They seem a perfect platform for open discussion and dissection of a wide variety of topics, anything from who makes the best cornflakes right through to the finer detail of philosophy. They are a place for everyone from the common man and everyday people to have their say.

But this is not what happens. Just about every website dedicated to promoting websites informs me that I should join forums to get my message out there, to make myself visible, to get people interested in what I have to say so they might come here and see this website. But I don't like forums. It all starts off so well, like-minded individuals sharing ideas, thoughts and opinions online. Then it slowly and inexorably degrades into a slinging match. One person's opinion is different from another so it starts with varying

opinions and ends up in personal attacks.

Carefully considered ideas degrade into the kind of conversation you would expect to hear in a bar between two aggressive drunks. People who pride themselves on being open-minded fight tooth and nail over a miniscule point of no relevance to the initial subject. And this is perhaps why they are so popular, because they are so contentious. Many of these forum posters perhaps are too afraid to confront someone face to face so the forum provides a perfect place to remain anonymous behind your pseudonym and avatar.

I would like to see a place for ideas. A place for thoughts and opinions where you are entitled to your opinion without contention.
